Richard Cohen

Richard Howard Cohen, of Anchorage, Alaska, died of bone marrow cancer, on August 15, 2012 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He was 64 years old.

Richard was born in New York City in 1947. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University in Massachusetts, and went on to receive his Masters Degree from University of California, Los Angeles, California, and received his PhD from Indiana University School of Business in 1992.

Professor Richard Cohen was a member of the faculty at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, College of Business and Public Policy, for the past 11 years. Dr. Cohen was on the faculty at the University of Hawaii and Lyon College prior to coming to the University of Alaska, Anchorage, where he taught in the areas of Finance and Real Estate.

Professor Cohen was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer 8 years ago. He fought long and hard to help find a possible cure for the disease by agreeing to participate in numerous clinical trials of new drugs and chemotherapy treatments. Throughout the years, he fought his illness with incredible patience, dignity, integrity and his keen intellect.

Professor Cohen donated his body to the Anatomy Department at Mayo, and, as a professor, this was his ultimate way to continue teaching, long after his own passing. He will be remembered as a highly-educated intellectual, and a kind, patient and gentle man, who was happiest when teaching and educating others.

He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Cohen, who lives in Walnut Creek, California.
