I first met Debbie during junior year but we became close friends after graduation when we lived around the corner from each other in Cleveland Circle and worked as research associates at MIT.  Debbie was working with a group studying the generation of language in computers.  She was witty, cynical, smart and very intelligent.  Through Debbie I started playing the recorder, and we went on hiking trips together with the MIT  Outing Club.  It was at MIT that she met her future husband, Noel Morris, a brilliant programmer and avid hiker.  His mother was a music teacher; Noel and Debbie shared that love of music.  Three years later, they were married; it was a great match.  We remained close friends in spite of the fact that I was in medical school/residency or living in New York or Atlanta.  In October 1983, Noel had a cardiac arrest, while he and Debbie were hiking alone in a remote part of the White Mountains.  Debbie started CPR but was unable to revive him.  Like his father, Noel was 40 at the time of his death.  Tragically, Debbie died after a short illness 5 years later.  Not a week goes by that I don't think of her and miss her friendship.  I know she would be amused to see what has happened to language and computers since her days at MIT.
