In Memory

Miriam Rosenn

Miriam Rosenn

Obituary provided by Judy Klein A69:

Miriam “Mimi” Myra Rosenn died at her home in Kodiak, Alaska on January 11, 2010 after a nearly 20-year battle with breast cancer. Mimi outlived every doctor’s expectations, displaying a never-flagging love of life despite the increasing limitations the disease put on her. By her own estimation, she lived at least nine extra lives, seeking aggressive new treatment with each new challenge the illness brought.

Even the night before her death, Mimi joked with friends, watched movies, drank a frozen mocha latte in her new recliner, voiced her request for a friend to make her liver pate, and then walked upstairs to bed.

Dr. Rosenn, a retired family practice physician, grew up in Albany, New York. She graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Psychology. She earned a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, and an M.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

She resided for many years in Oakland, California, while practicing medicine at San Francisco General Hospital. For two years, she worked for the native hospital in Barrow, AK and for another two years at the medical facility on an Indian reservation in Arizona.

After moving to Kodiak 11 years ago, she worked at KANA from 1999 to 2004. In Kodiak, Dr. Rosenn served on the Boards of the Women’s Resource Center and the Humane Society; hosted a show on KMXT, the public radio station; performed and stage managed at the local community theater; and was active in the Democratic Party, for a time serving as a representative to the state Democracic convention.

Dr. Rosenn loved to garden, kayak, hike, back pack, travel the globe, and enjoy the company of her many friends. She derived more than a little pleasure from trouncing others at Scrabble. To the children of her college friends, she was a wonderful “Auntie Mame.” Dr. Rosenn is survived by her cousin, Ira Rheingold and his family, her loving friends, and her cats, Alex and Gus.

I remember Miriam from upper level math classes.  Our paths didn't cross again.  Very sharp lady.   We grieve.

I'm new to this site.  Exploring it has gotten me to the "In Memory" page.  My enthusiasm about the possibility of catching up with those in our class is more than tempered by reading about Mimi's passing.  She was my freshman roommate in a triple at Metcalf East and I remember her as someone who was smart, flexible and kind.  I truly regret having lost contact with her.  It sounds like she created an extraordinary and courageous life for herself.
